Direct-shipper cold-call script
The 4-touch cadence that lands one high-margin lane a month.
Who you're calling
The transportation coordinator or logistics manager — not the receptionist, not "whoever handles shipping." Ask by title.
Call 1 — the intro (30 seconds)
"Hi, [name] please — I'm looking for whoever coordinates outbound shipping.
>
Great, hi [name], I'm [you] with [company]. We run a 26' liftgate truck out of [city] and I noticed you ship regionally — I'm not calling to sell you anything today, just wanted to see if you ever have overflow freight that doesn't fit your regular carrier's schedule.
>
If yes: perfect, can I email you our insurance certs and a lane sheet so we're on file when something comes up?
>
If no: totally understand. Mind if I check back in 30 days?"
Email 1 — same day
Subject: 26' liftgate out of [city] — for your files
Hi [name], as discussed. Attached: - Insurance certificates (all coverages current) - Our lane sheet (regional coverage map) - W-9 - Carrier packet
>
No pressure — just want to be on file. If anything urgent comes up outside your regular carrier's schedule, my direct line is [###].
>
Thanks, [You]
Call 2 — week 2
"Hi [name], [you] again from [company] — just checking in. Any overflow this week I can help with?"
Call 3 — week 3, ask for the trial
"[Name], if you ever want to try us out — even one lane, one week — I'm confident we'd earn a spot in your rotation. What would that look like?"
The trial
If they give you one lane, one week:
- Show up 15 minutes early every pickup
- Photo every delivery with timestamp
- Never call them with a problem — call with a solution
- After week 1, ask for two lanes
One direct shipper at $1,800/week beats three broker loads.
